What local college student couldn’t use some help in paying for college next year? That’s what the local Alpha Xi Chapter of Tri Kappa sorority in Connersville is trying to do – help local students with college – as their annual scholarship application process is underway.

Annually, the state organization of Tri Kappa dishes out almost $500,000 in scholarships and has been doing so since 1914, and is ready to do so again.  Scholarship Chair Davida Cox said the chapter is now ready to take applications for a total of 17 available scholarships. The different scholarships include 12 $1,000 Academic scholarships, in which students who apply must already be enrolled in either an accredited baccalaureate or graduate program and have completed one academic year in college. The criteria for that scholarship will include a review of the selection committee of the student’s goals, work experience and volunteer service since high school. Two $1,000 Fine Arts scholarships will also be up for grabs statewide, and will be awarded to students majoring in art, dance, drama or music. Much like the academic scholarships, students applying must be enrolled in either an accredited baccalaureate or graduate program and have completed one academic year. Also available are two $1,000 Key Scholarships statewide, which are for students who have no college degree beyond high school and have had a lapse in their education for at least five years – along with the criteria of being currently enrolled in either an accredited baccalaureate or graduate program and have completed one academic year. Finally, a $1,000 Twanett Nutter Fleming Music Award scholarship will be given out to one student who is enrolled in an accredited course of study leading to a music teaching degree in a private, public or parochial school, and has completed at least one academic year.

Cox said that, despite students statewide being able to apply for the scholarships, local students have just as good an opportunity to be awarded one as any other student. “Our area boasts numerous college students who are talented and would qualify for these scholarships,” Cox stated. “We are hopeful that those students will be brought to our attention so we may begin the process of submitting an application for State Tri Kappa scholarships.” High school seniors in Fayette County shouldn’t feel left out, though, as the local Alpha Xi chapter will also be offering scholarships at the county level. Those scholarships can be applied for through the Connersville High School counseling department beginning in February 2018.
